a discourse by
Sant Shri Naam Deo Ji Maharaj
Parliament of Victoria  ·  Tuesday 8 September 2026
We meet on the lands of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people of the Kulin Nation

we pay our respects to their Elders past and present, and honour a spiritual tradition of listening to land and silence carried on this Country for tens of thousands of years

the proposition
Harmony does notrequire sameness.
Can we live with deep differences without allowing difference to become division?

Vihangam Yog
the eternal science of consciousness
the name
Vihangam: the way of the bird.

A bird does not fight the ground it rises from. It lifts above, and sees the whole. Vihangam Yog is the soul taking that flight - above thought, into its own vastness.

a century ago
Seventeen years of meditation. One scripture: the Swarved.

Anant Shri Sadguru Sadafal Deo Ji Maharaj revived this practice in 1924 and set down what he directly experienced. Not a belief system - a method, carried unbroken through a century of teachers to the presiding Sadguru today.

The Swarved Mahamandir, Varanasi

the world's largest meditation centre - 20,000 people can sit in one silence

recognition
Inaugurated by thePrime Minister of India.

In December 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the Swarved Mahamandir and paid tribute at the statue of Sadguru Shri Sadafal Deo Ji Maharaj.

The evidence
what the research already shows
the need, in four figures
42.9%of Australians aged 16-85 have experienced a mental disorder in their lifetime
$220bnwhat poor mental health costs Australia every year
1 in 6people worldwide experience loneliness - in the most connected era in history
871,000deaths a year linked to loneliness and isolation
ABS 2020-22 · Productivity Commission 2020 · WHO Commission on Social Connection 2025
what research finds
What centuries of practice knew, instruments now measure.

The anchor meta-analysis of 47 trials found moderate evidence that meditation programs improve anxiety, depression and pain - and systematic reviews through 2024-2026 keep replicating the pattern across countries and populations, from students to health workers.

Harmony, practised
what happens when faiths share one silence
harmony is not uniformity
Not one note repeated.Different notes, one music.
Respect does not require agreement. It requires the maturity to protect another person's dignity when their beliefs differ from our own.
Tens of millions. No invitations. No upheaval.

at the Kumbh, every caste, condition and nationality shares one ground - and what arises is ease

what Vihangam Yog contributes
Before every description:I am a conscious human being.
Thoughts, emotions, joy and sorrow, hope and fear - that field of consciousness is common to the human condition. The inquiry begins there.
where conflict begins
We stop meeting a personand meet our assumptions.
Conflict begins when identity becomes so rigid that another person's difference is felt as a threat. Harmony asks us to see the human being first.
a practical test
Not only: what do I believe? Also: what is my belief making of me?
If my practice makes me more humble, patient and compassionate, it is transforming me. If it makes me contemptuous of people who are different, something essential is missing.
the inner source of outer behaviour

A thought becomes an attitude.

An attitude influences language.

Language influences relationships.

Relationships influence communities.

from inner awareness to harmony
Awareness creates space. In that space, a different response.

I begin to notice the distance between what another person actually said and the story my mind created about them. I can listen before reacting. I can disagree without demeaning. I can hold conviction without hostility. A person secure within does not need to diminish another to preserve their own identity.

the two architectures
A law can prevent discrimination. It cannot remove prejudice from the mind.
A policy can bring people into the same room; it cannot guarantee they meet with openness. The outer and inner architectures of harmony must develop together.
attention
Much of modern lifecompetes for the mind.
Messages, headlines, notifications, demands. The ability to bring attention deliberately to one place, and to observe rather than immediately respond, is becoming increasingly valuable.
not self-absorption
Genuine inner awareness makes usmore capable of life - not less.
It strengthens responsibility rather than avoidance, deepens compassion rather than indifference. Not indifference to the world - engagement with it, without being controlled by every internal disturbance.
the role of the Sadguru
We are not asked to believe. We are helped to know.

In this tradition the journey is undertaken under the guidance of the Sadguru - a fully realised master who has directly experienced the states of consciousness the path describes, and who guides the seeker toward that experience rather than toward intellectual assent.

सारा विश्व हमार है, हम हैं सब संसार॥
The entire world is ours, and we are of the entire world.
Sadguru Shri Sadafal Deo Ji Maharaj
Five quiet minutes
a silence entered together
When people of faith work together in service, harmony becomes a shared practice

for the vulnerable, for young people, for social cohesion - conviction and friendship can coexist, and communities notice

May we see the same human dignityin one another.
